Former Mayor of Arcadia, an affluent area on the outskirts of Los Angeles in the United States, has shockingly admitted to her actions as an illegal agent of the Chinese government. Eileen Wang, the 58-year-old public official, has agreed to plead guilty to one count of acting as a foreign agent without official permission from US authorities. Citing Al Jazeera on Tuesday (12/05/2026), the US Department of Justice revealed that Wang conducted her covert activities from late 2020 until 2022. During that period, she was known to have promoted various pro-Beijing propaganda at the direction of Chinese government officials without reporting her status to the US government. Wang officially resigned from her position as Mayor of Arcadia on Monday. In her admission, she operated a website called US News Center, which was claimed to be a news portal for Chinese-American citizens, but in reality was used to disseminate narratives supporting the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Wang’s activities also included republishing official Chinese government essays that denied allegations of genocide against the Uyghur ethnic minority in Xinjiang. In carrying out her actions, Wang collaborated with a California man named Yaoning Sun, who had previously been sentenced to four years in prison in October 2025 for similar charges. In response to the case, Wang’s lawyers, Brian A Sun and Jason Liang, expressed apologies for the mistake made by their client in her personal life. They emphasised that the activities were not related to Wang’s duties as a public official, but purely personal matters conducted with someone she believed to be her fiancé at the time. “It is important to note that the conduct underlying this agreement with the government solely relates to Mrs Wang’s personal life—that is, the media platform she once operated with someone she believed to be her fiancé—and not conduct as an elected public official,” stated Sun and Liang. The two lawyers added that Wang’s love and dedication to the Arcadia community has never changed. They also requested understanding and continued support from the local community regarding the situation facing the former mayor. However, US Assistant Attorney General for National Security, John A Eisenberg, expressed deep concern over these findings. According to him, it is deeply troubling when someone holding public trust has secretly received and carried out instructions from foreign officials. “It is deeply troubling that someone who previously received and executed instructions from PRC government officials is now in a position of public trust, especially since that relationship with a foreign government was never disclosed,” said Eisenberg. Eileen Wang now faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison for her actions. This case has emerged just as US President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Wednesday to discuss crucial issues ranging from the Iran war, trade, to Taiwan’s status.
