US launches strike on IRGC naval base in northern Iran

Tehran - A naval base of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in the northern province of Gilan has been confirmed as the target of a United States attack on Friday morning. “This morning, the IRGC naval base in Zibakenar was attacked by the US enemy, causing damage to equipment within the complex,” said local security official Ali Bagheri, as quoted by Mehr news agency. Local authorities will conduct an investigation into the attack, he said, adding that there were no casualties in the US strike. On 18 June 2026, Tehran and Washington signed a peace memorandum to end the conflict that erupted on 28 February. However, US forces resumed strikes against Iran starting on 8 July. US Central Command claimed the attacks were in retaliation for Iranian actions against commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian forces responded to the US strikes by launching counter-attacks against American military bases in the Middle East. President Trump subsequently stated that the ceasefire agreement between the US and Iran was no longer in effect.
