Tensions in the Gulf region have reignited after the United States launched a new wave of air strikes into Iranian territory. The Pentagon confirmed the military operation aims to degrade Iran’s ability to disrupt the security of international maritime routes.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the operation through an official statement. The military stressed that the strikes were directly ordered by the White House.

“At 5:00 p.m. local time today, US Central Command forces began launching more strikes against Iran to continue degrading their ability to attack civilian mariners and commercial vessels transiting freely in the Strait of Hormuz,” US Central Command wrote in a post on platform X.

CENTCOM added that President Donald Trump “directed the strikes to hold Iranian forces accountable.”

Iranian state media reported that several locations in the southern province of Hormozgan were targeted. The affected areas include Qeshm Island, Bandar Abbas, and Hajiabad. Although state media initially referred to the perpetrators only as “the enemy,” field reports confirmed damage to a number of military facilities.

The Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), quoting Qeshm Governor Hossein Amir Teymouri, stated that around 10 to 11 enemy projectiles struck Qeshm Island. Teymouri asserted that all affected sites were military targets and that there were no casualties on the island.

However, in a separate update, IRNA reported that a maintenance technician from the Iran Mobile Telecommunications Company was killed while on duty on Farur Island, Bandar Lengeh County. Two of the technician’s colleagues were also reported injured in the attack.

This military operation was launched after Iran claimed to have attacked several US military bases in the Gulf region. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated they used guided drones to target US military assets, including Patriot air defence systems.

The impact of the reciprocal attacks has also affected neighbouring countries. Kuwait’s Ministry of Defence reported that three of its land border posts in the north sustained damage from what it described as “hostile criminal attacks.”

Additionally, an offshore oil drilling facility belonging to the Kuwait Oil Company was struck by a guided drone, injuring one worker. Kuwaiti authorities have since placed their armed forces on full alert to safeguard the country’s sovereign territory.
