Jakarta — Former Vice President (10th and 12th term) Jusuf Kalla expressed deep concern regarding the joint US-Israeli military strike against Iran, characterising American foreign policy as inherently aggressive and interventionist.

Kalla stated his grave disquiet over the assault, particularly as it occurs during ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran concerning nuclear matters. He accused the United States of routinely attacking nations whose ideologies diverge from American interests, citing multiple historical instances of American military intervention.

“This reflects our broader concern about America’s nature and the brutality it has demonstrated towards Iran,” Kalla remarked.

Kalla extended condolences following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in the US-Israeli strike on Saturday, 28 February 2026. He expressed particular regret over the assassination of Khamenei, describing the action as deeply lamentable.

Analysing Iran’s internal political landscape, Kalla observed that the country remains fractured amongst three major factions: those supporting the government; reformists who have undertaken extensive demonstrations in recent months; and monarchists connected to the former Pahlavi dynasty. Despite these internal divisions, Kalla emphasised the gravity of Khamenei’s death.

Kalla highlighted Indonesia’s diplomatic obligation in responding to the conflict. As a Muslim-majority nation and United Nations member state, Indonesia must advocate for immediate conflict cessation. “Indonesia, as a Muslim-majority country particularly within the UN, must strive to call for and pray for this situation to end immediately,” he concluded.
