US-Israel Relations Strained, VP Vance Warns Netanyahu's Government
Tensions between the United States and Israel have escalated after US Vice President JD Vance issued a stark warning to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. Speaking at the White House, Vance responded to Israeli dissatisfaction with a recent US-Iran agreement by reminding officials that President Donald Trump is Israel’s sole remaining powerful ally. “Donald J. Trump is the only head of state in the entire world who sympathises with the state of Israel right now,” Vance told reporters. He noted that he had not yet heard Netanyahu’s objections directly but criticised members of the Israeli cabinet who attacked the deal. Vance highlighted that the majority of defence systems protecting Israel are supplied by the United States, with Washington providing approximately two-thirds of Israel’s military hardware and funding. The friction comes months after the US and Israel conducted joint strikes against Iran. The subsequent US-Iran agreement has been rejected by several Israeli officials, including National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who argue it fails to address Iran’s nuclear and missile programmes. Vance dismissed their concerns, stating the deal is supported by Gulf states and could positively transform regional stability. In a separate interview with the New York Times, he characterised the Israeli reaction as ‘panic’ and excessive ‘anxiety’, bluntly adding, “You are a country of 9 million people. You cannot just kill your way out of every national security problem you have.”
