US-Israel Relations Sour as Trump Considers Backing Netanyahu's Opposition

Diplomatic relations between the United States (US) and Israel are reportedly at a nadir. President Donald Trump is said to be considering the possibility of a change in Israel’s political leadership following rising tensions with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government over military operations in Lebanon. This surprising move comes after Washington grew frustrated with Netanyahu’s stance of continuing military aggression despite intensive diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the regional conflict. According to a Channel 12 report cited by Middle East Monitor on Tuesday (23/6), Trump administration officials believe the dominance of hardline factions within Netanyahu’s coalition is the main obstacle to bilateral relations. As a form of political pressure, the Trump administration has reportedly established communication with several key opposition figures in Israel. Names such as former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, who now leads the Together Party, and Gadi Eisenkot of the Yashar Party are said to be figures Washington is engaging with. “The US administration has expressed concerns about the hardline groups in Netanyahu’s government and is working to build a new base of popular support ahead of the elections,” the report stated. This dynamic is predicted to significantly alter Israel’s political landscape. Tensions have further escalated after National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir openly rejected a ceasefire plan with Lebanon promoted by the US. Ben Gvir even urged Netanyahu to firmly tell Trump that Israel will not halt its military operations. With sharp differences in vision regarding the Lebanon conflict and the US-Iran memorandum of understanding, Washington’s support for opposition figures could signal the end of Netanyahu’s era of absolute dominance in Israeli politics ahead of the upcoming elections.
