US-Iran War Triggers Worst Energy Crisis in History

The United States’ war against Iran has caused the worst energy crisis in history, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol revealed this, stating that if the war is not ended soon, it will impact global energy stability. “This is indeed the biggest crisis in history,” Birol said, quoted from Reuters on Tuesday (21/4/2026). Europe previously experienced an LPG gas crisis due to Russia’s blockade following the European Union’s support for Ukraine. “This crisis is already very large; if you combine the impact of the oil crisis and the gas crisis with Russia,” he explained. The IEA has had to release oil reserves amounting to 400 million barrels, a record since the agency’s establishment. Since Friday (17/4/2026), several ships have been detected successfully passing through those narrow waters safely. However, they will be closed again if the US blockades the shipping route. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has stated that approaching the Strait of Hormuz will be considered cooperation with the enemy. The US naval blockade has caused 23 merchant ships to be unable to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) views this as a violation of the ceasefire. In addition, the US has submitted a new proposal regarding the end of the war, which the SNSC has accepted. Negotiations are known to have stopped today, Tuesday (21/4/2026), with no signs of the war ending between the two parties.
