US-Iran to Resume Talks, Trump Insists Ceasefire Is Over

US President Donald Trump has revealed that the Iranian government has requested to resume negotiations with the United States. Trump said he has agreed for the two countries to return to the negotiating table.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to continue ‘talks’. We have agreed to do so,” Trump wrote in a post on the social media platform Truth Social, as reported by CNN on Friday (10/7/2026).

Despite being open to restarting negotiations with Iran, Trump made clear he is unwilling to reverse his decision regarding the ceasefire. He stated unequivocally that the ceasefire in the current US-Iran conflict has ended.

“However, the United States has told them, in the strongest terms, that the Ceasefire is OVER!” Trump added.

Diplomacy amid tensions

A diplomat told CNN that Qatari negotiators coordinating with the United States have departed for Iran to meet officials there. Earlier, a US official said the Trump administration’s strategy was to launch strikes before temporarily halting military operations. The move was taken in an effort to prevent further escalation whilst leaving room for a diplomatic path.

For context, Donald Trump had already declared that the ceasefire with Iran was no longer in effect. He made the announcement on Wednesday (8/7) after Washington launched strikes against the Islamic Republic, which Iran responded to by targeting US military bases in the Gulf region.

“As far as I’m concerned, it’s over,” Trump said at the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, when asked whether the ceasefire with Iran had ended.

“It’s a waste of time dealing with them,” he said, as quoted by AFP on Wednesday (8/7).

Previously, the US military announced that its forces had completed the latest operation targeting air defences, missile launch sites, command networks, and Iranian naval vessels. The strikes were launched in retaliation for Tehran’s latest actions against commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
