US-Iran Tensions Flare, Trump Remains Open to Diplomacy

The White House has stated that United States President Donald Trump remains open to diplomacy with Iran, despite both nations launching attacks on each other in recent times. The White House said, as reported by AFP on Friday (17/7/2026), that Washington is still communicating with Tehran as tensions between the two countries escalate. “The President will hold them accountable when they renege on the words they have given to the United States,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters at the White House on Thursday (16/7) local time. “But at the same time, he is always open to diplomacy,” Leavitt stressed. Leavitt then claimed that Iran actually wants to reach an agreement with the US. “They have expressed a desire to reach a deal to the President. We are in communication with them, but again, the President will not allow them to fire upon ships in that Strait without consequence,” she said, referring to attacks in the Strait of Hormuz. The statement was made a day after Trump thanked Iran for releasing a US citizen who had been detained since December 2024. The release was seen as a potential opening for diplomacy. The Middle East region has heated up again after the US and Iran launched fresh attacks, putting a fragile ceasefire agreement signed by the leaders of both countries in June at risk. In recent days, the US has launched several waves of airstrikes against Iranian targets, both on land and at sea. Washington explained that the strikes were intended to limit Tehran’s ability to threaten shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz has become the focus of the latest dispute between the US and Iran, as both vie for control over the vital waterway for global oil and gas supplies. Trump recently warned Iran that the US could expand its strikes to target power plants and bridges in the country if Tehran does not return to the negotiating table.
