US-Iran Talks in Switzerland Reportedly Cancelled
The Swiss Foreign Ministry announced that talks between the United States and Iran scheduled to take place in Switzerland on Friday (19/6) have been cancelled, RIA Novosti reported, citing Reuters. It was previously reported that US Vice President JD Vance had not yet departed for Switzerland for the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Iran because the technical plans related to the talks were not yet finalised. On 14 June, Iran and the US confirmed that the drafting of the MoU had been completed. On Thursday, the two countries signed the MoU online to end the military conflict that began on 28 February. The MoU provides a 60-day window for the US and Iran to negotiate a final agreement regarding Iran’s nuclear programme and US sanctions. Additionally, the document sets a deadline for the US to lift its naval blockade, and for Iran to restore shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
