US-Iran MoU: Egyptian Ambassador Stresses Importance of Gulf Security

Egypt is committed to maintaining its diplomatic role during the 60-day negotiation phase. Jakarta (ANTARA) - Egyptian Ambassador to Indonesia Yasser Hassan Farag Elshemy welcomed the memorandum between the United States and Iran and stressed the importance of maintaining stability and security in the Gulf region. The memorandum refers to the long-distance agreement signed by Iran and the United States early Thursday (18/6) to end the military conflict that has been ongoing since 28 February. “The national security of the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) is an inseparable part of Egypt’s own national security. From day one, we have consistently provided strong political and military support to our Gulf partners,” Ambassador Elshemy said on the sidelines of the 2026 National Day Reception of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Jakarta. “While we understand Iran’s strategic logic, we stand firmly with our brothers and sisters in the GCC countries.” He further stated that Egypt has been actively engaged in resolving the US-Iran war since the first day of the conflict. Egypt opened unofficial lines of communication with the Iranian side to facilitate the exchange of vital information. “We have been consistently present in all negotiation tracks alongside our partners in Qatar and Turkey, as well as with the Pakistani, American, and Iranian parties. Egypt is fully committed to maintaining this active diplomatic role during the upcoming 60-day negotiation phase,” he explained. Additionally, Iran has committed not to acquire nuclear weapons, with the issue of Iran’s nuclear programme to be resolved through a separate agreement. Both parties are expected to negotiate this issue over the next 60 days. For Iran, the primary objective is the lifting of a series of sanctions imposed upon it. Technical-level talks between the United States and Iran will resume next week after a temporary pause, according to Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The talks are scheduled to take place again in Burgenstock, Switzerland.
