Indonesia welcomes the two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, as well as the restoration of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, according to the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu). Kemlu spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang stated that this step reflects the openness of the conflicting parties to pursue diplomatic channels.

“Indonesia views this momentum as a positive beginning and encourages that this opportunity be utilised optimally to advance a sustainable peaceful resolution,” said Yvonne in Jakarta on Wednesday (8/4).

She emphasised that dialogue and diplomacy are the only ways to resolve conflicts.

Therefore, Indonesia’s contribution to easing tensions in the Gulf region will be based on that approach.

Indonesia will also continue to support constructive diplomatic efforts to achieve a more permanent conflict resolution.

Such efforts, according to Yvonne, must prioritise the interests of civilians.

Meanwhile, Kemlu’s Second Spokesperson, Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela, stated that the ceasefire opens opportunities for restoring shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

“With this development, we hope it can evolve into a more permanent conflict resolution that has a positive impact on our interests, both in terms of freedom of navigation and for the future,” said Nabyl.

He assessed that this development impacts not only Indonesia but also the Gulf region and the world.
