US-Iran Agree to Two-Week Ceasefire, Strait of Hormuz Opened
US President Donald Trump has announced a temporary ceasefire with Iran lasting two weeks. This agreement is conditional on Iran fully, immediately, and safely opening the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump made the statement via the White House’s X account, as seen on Wednesday (8/4/2026). He said the ceasefire decision was taken after communicating with parties in Pakistan.
“Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir from Pakistan, where they requested that I postpone the use of destructive force that was to be sent tonight to Iran, and on the condition that Iran agrees to the full, immediate, and safe opening of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend bombing and attacks against Iran for a two-week period. This will be a two-way ceasefire!” Trump stated.
Trump assessed that the chances of achieving a peace agreement between the US and Iran are increasingly open. He mentioned that discussions towards long-term peace in the Middle East are now in the final stage.
“It is very close to achieving a definitive agreement on long-term peace with Iran, and peace in the Middle East. We have received a 10-point proposal from Iran, and believe that it is a workable basis for negotiation. Almost all various points of past contention have been agreed between the United States and Iran, but the two-week period will allow that agreement to be completed and finalised,” Trump explained.
US Accepts Iran’s Peace Proposal
Alongside the ceasefire being implemented, the US has also accepted Iran’s 10-point proposal as a basis for peace negotiations. Trump said this step was taken after military targets were deemed achieved.
“The reason for doing this is that we have met and even exceeded all military objectives, and are very close to achieving a definitive agreement on long-term peace with Iran, and peace in the Middle East. We have received a 10-point proposal from Iran, and believe that it is a workable basis for negotiation,” Trump’s statement posted on the White House’s X account, as seen, Wednesday (8/4/2026).
According to him, almost all long-standing points of contention between the US and Iran have found common ground. He is optimistic that a full agreement can be finalised during the two-week ceasefire period.
“On behalf of the United States, as President, and also representing countries in the Middle East, it is an honour to see this long-term issue approaching resolution,” Trump explained.
Chronology Leading to the Ceasefire
This ceasefire stems from US plans to attack Iran scheduled in the near future. However, following a request from Pakistan, Trump decided to postpone the military operation.
This will be a two-way ceasefire!” he stated.
