US Intelligence Claims China Developing Next-Generation Nuclear Weapons

Moscow (ANTARA) - US intelligence agencies believe that China is developing a new generation of nuclear weapons, according to a report by CNN television on Saturday, citing several sources familiar with the intelligence assessment.

US intelligence agencies claim that China conducted an explosive nuclear test in June 2020, a step which Washington says reflects China’s ambition to transform its nuclear capabilities into the most technologically advanced in the world.

The development reportedly includes the creation of missiles capable of carrying multiple miniaturised nuclear warheads.

China is also allegedly developing low-yield tactical nuclear weapons, which the country has never previously possessed.

Chinese Embassy spokesperson in Washington, DC, Liu Pengyu, told the television station that the US “has distorted and denigrated China’s nuclear policy.”

“This is political manipulation aimed at pursuing nuclear hegemony and evading its own nuclear disarmament responsibilities… China firmly opposes such narratives,” Liu said.

“US allegations about China conducting nuclear tests are entirely baseless. China opposes any attempt by the United States to fabricate excuses to resume its own nuclear testing,” Liu added.

US officials told CNN that President Donald Trump’s administration is determined to include China in nuclear weapons agreements.
