US imposes sanctions on Iraqi militia commanders for attacks on US personnel
Washington (ANTARA) - The United States has imposed sanctions on seven commanders of Iraqi militias allied with Iran for planning and carrying out attacks against US personnel, infrastructure, and interests in Iraq.
The sanctions were enacted as part of Operation “Economic Fury,” according to an announcement from the US Department of the Treasury on Friday.
“Today, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the US Department of the Treasury has designated seven commanders of Iraqi militias responsible for the planning, direction, and execution of attacks against US personnel, facilities, and interests in Iraq,” OFAC stated.
The action targets commanders and senior officials of Iran-supported Iraqi militia organisations, including Ammar Jasim Kadhim Al Rammahi, Radhwan Yousif Hameed Almohammed, and Hasan Dheyab Hamzah Hamzah from Kata’ib Hizballah.
Further individuals include Safaa Adnan Jabbar Suwaed from Asa’ib Ahl Al-Haqq; Khalid Jameel Abed Albakhatra and Saeed Kadhim Mukhamis from Kata’ib Sayyid Al-Shuhada; and Husham Hashim Jaythoom from Harakat Al-Nujaba, the statement added.
“These militia groups operate with near impunity, attacking US personnel and innocent civilians across Iraq, siphoning off Iraq’s wealth to fund their terrorist activities, and undermining Iraq’s sovereignty and democratic processes,” the statement noted.
The organisations have claimed responsibility for a number of attacks against the US and the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS (a terrorist organisation banned in Russia), and receive training and funding from Iran, the statement further indicated.
On Thursday, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth stated that the Treasury Department launched Operation “Economic Fury” against Iran to maximise economic pressure on the country.
