US Human Rights Groups Sue Trump Administration Over ICC Sanctions

A number of human rights organisations filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against United States President Donald Trump over sanctions imposed on the International Criminal Court (ICC). They argue the policy prevents victims of war crimes from pursuing justice. The root of the issue lies in the Trump administration’s move to block assets and ban travel for ICC judges and prosecutors. Washington took this firm action after the ICC investigated alleged war crimes involving its key ally, Israel, including issuing an arrest warrant for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Four major organisations, including Human Rights Watch (HRW) and the Open Society Institute, asserted that Trump’s action constitutes an arbitrary abuse of power. ‘This move undermines the international community’s ability to bring perpetrators of genocide and war crimes to justice,’ the coalition stated in a 101-page lawsuit. The impact of the US sanctions has been significant. Since the executive order was signed in February 2025, at least eight judges, three prosecutors, and several human rights organisations have been affected. The United Nations and the European Union had previously warned the US to revoke the sanctions, but Washington instead threatened to tighten pressure on ICC member states. The lawsuit not only targets Trump but also names US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. This legal battle marks a new chapter in the tension between the United States and the world’s highest criminal court.
