US House of Representatives rejects war powers resolution to limit Trump's strikes on Iran
The US House of Representatives on Thursday (5/3) voted down a war powers resolution aimed at preventing President Donald Trump from ordering further military strikes against Iran without congressional approval. The low chamber recorded a 212 to 219 vote, with party-line splits, to reject the measure. The resolution sought to prevent Trump from authorising further military action against Iran without the consent of Congress. The Senate, the upper chamber, controlled by the Republican Party, blocked the resolution a day earlier with a vote of 53 to 47 on Wednesday (4/3). The latest congressional vote shows that Democrats and Republicans remain deeply divided on the issue, with Democrats generally criticising military action against Iran, while Republicans largely defend the president. ‘We must not let someone who aspires to be a King drag us into endless war in the Middle East. The Republican Party can raise billions of dollars for bombs, but cannot do anything to lower the cost of essentials or healthcare,’ wrote Hakeem Jeffries, Democratic leader in the US House of Representatives, in a post on X.
