US Heats Up on Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim Gives a Stinging Response
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has reiterated his country’s principled and uncompromising stance against Israel. The firm statement was made in response to political pressure and threats from members of the United States Congress, which he deemed as attempts to undermine the sovereignty and dignity of the neighbouring country.
Speaking in Paroi, Negeri Sembilan, Anwar stressed that Malaysia is not a country that can be made a puppet or pressured by any external force. “I affirm the country’s position that we are firm and uncompromising towards the illegitimate Zionist entity of Israel. Do not think we can be challenged so easily as if Malaysia has no dignity and can be made a puppet. We have sovereignty and as long as I am here, I will ensure our stance does not change one bit, no matter how great the threat!” he asserted.
Anwar revealed that the criticism and threats from American politicians arose following Malaysia’s decision to tighten the ban on Israeli citizens, including in trade relations. He noted that these external parties completely fail to understand the region’s diplomatic history, as Malaysia has enforced restrictions against Israel for decades. “They made statements condemning me because of Malaysia’s decision to ban the entry of Israeli citizens, including on trade issues and so on. It turns out they have not followed developments at all. Many countries impose bans, and Malaysia has done so for decades. So they are using this opportunity to threaten me and Malaysia, and to plead for the American government to take action,” he explained.
Anwar openly responded to the threats by affirming Malaysia’s status as a free and sovereign nation. He stated that Malaysia’s firm rejection of Israel is based on the oppression, colonisation, and daily mass killings that claim the lives of civilians, women, and children in Palestine. “I answered clearly. First, they must understand this is a free and sovereign country. And our rejection of Israel is because of their tyranny, because of their colonisation, because of the daily killings. How can their people’s representatives erase the reality of the killing of children and civilians, women, the destruction of homes, the conquest of land, and yet be unable to speak out,” he said.
When pressed by reporters regarding accusations linking Malaysia to Hamas, Anwar calmly explained that his diplomatic approach is entirely transparent. He revealed that he had personally informed US President Donald Trump about his meeting with Hamas leaders, which was solely to convey humanitarian condolences for family members killed in bombings. “We have no problem. We have no problem with cases of crime, murder, and tyranny. So we have no problem with the relationship issue,” he added.
Regarding concerns about the impact of this conflict on bilateral relations between Malaysia and the United States, Anwar expressed confidence that economic cooperation would not be disrupted. He assured that Malaysia would continue to maintain good relations and welcome American investment and trade, but without sacrificing its critical stance on the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza. “The United States has known about Malaysia’s policy for decades. So I don’t think this should damage relations. We still welcome American citizens as well as US business and trade investments,” he said. “We maintain good relations with the United States as we do with other countries. But it is impossible for us to be incapable and afraid to criticise the excesses of killing innocent people, including in Palestine and Gaza,” Anwar concluded.
