US Halts Strikes on Iran Amid Behind-the-Scenes Diplomatic Efforts

The United States has suspended strikes against Iran as behind-the-scenes diplomatic efforts are currently underway to de-escalate renewed tensions. Washington and Tehran have been trading attacks since Tuesday (7/7), continuing through Thursday (9/7) local time. Both countries have accused each other of violating a ceasefire agreement. President Donald Trump even announced that the ceasefire had ended. According to a report by prominent US media outlet CNN, citing several Washington officials, the US deliberately launched attacks and then paused them temporarily to avoid further escalation. The pause in strikes, according to the US sources cited by CNN, is also intended to provide room for diplomacy to proceed. However, the US official added that Washington still maintains a list of targets as a bargaining chip with Tehran. Several US officials reportedly stated that preparations are in place for potential new US strikes if necessary tonight. However, according to these officials, Washington authorities are currently prioritising the diplomatic route. Earlier on Friday (10/7), aboard the US aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea, flight crews were reported to have armed fighter jets with weaponry, while pilots underwent training to prepare for possible new strike missions. The carrier’s commander has reportedly briefed thousands of sailors on board about the heightened tensions in the region and stressed the importance of remaining vigilant, in accordance with standard procedures. Alongside preparations for potential strikes, US fighter jet pilots continue to conduct routine defensive operations, launching operational flights both day and night. Despite this, US officials stated that Iranian claims of additional US strikes overnight were inaccurate. However, the officials noted that the situation remains dynamic and strikes could resume if necessary.
