US General Describes South Korea as 'Dagger in the Heart of Asia', Provoking North Korean Fury
North Korea has expressed outrage and strongly condemned comments made by a United States military general, who described South Korea as a “dagger in the heart of Asia”. Pyongyang maintains that such remarks reflect Washington’s broader strategy to contain China, North Korea’s key ally.
The controversial comments, reported by AFP on Wednesday, were made by General Xavier Brunson, the commander of the United States Forces Korea (USFK). General Brunson also serves as the commander of the United Nations Command and the ROK-US Combined Forces Command.
Brunson’s remarks have emerged amidst growing speculation regarding US efforts to expand the role of the USFK to counter China’s regional influence. Currently, approximately 28,500 US troops are stationed in South Korea to assist in defending its ally against North Korea’s nuclear threats.
North Korea’s state news agency, KCNA, published comments from analyst Kim Myong Chol, who stated that Brunson’s remarks portray the US as a “clan leader disrupting peace and the worst war empire in the world”. Kim, a Japan-based analyst, is considered an unofficial foreign spokesperson for the North Korean authorities.
According to Kim, Brunson’s comments reflect Washington’s intention to use South Korea as a “vital geopolitical instrument to realise its regional strategy aimed at containing China”. For decades, China has served as North Korea’s primary trading partner and a major source of diplomatic and economic support.
South Korea’s presidential office responded to the comments over the weekend, stating that it was aware of the US general’s statements and has “maintained communication at various levels regarding all related issues”. Local South Korean media outlets, including News1 and JTBC, reported that Seoul has expressed concerns to Washington regarding such remarks.
In the interview that sparked the controversy, General Brunson stated: “When (the Chinese) look from the eastern coast of China, what they see is Korea, a dagger in the heart of Asia.” According to transcripts from the US Army War College Institute for Strategic Studies, Brunson also described Japan as a “shield that serves as a buffer” against Beijing’s regional ambitions.
Last week, the Chinese Embassy in Seoul strongly condemned Brunson’s comments, labelling them “completely crossing the line” and “full of hostility and aggression towards China”. Beijing authorities have questioned whether such statements were authorised by Washington.
