Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has dismissed the US Army Chief of Staff, Randy George, amid rising military tensions in the Middle East. This move is part of the latest reshuffle in the Pentagon’s top ranks.

The dismissal of an active general during an ongoing conflict situation like the current one is almost unprecedented in modern US military history.

The Pentagon stated that George will immediately retire from his position, even though his term has more than a year remaining. The US government has not disclosed the reasons behind this sudden decision.

In its statement, the Pentagon expressed appreciation for George’s decades of service. “We wish him the best in his retirement,” the Pentagon statement said, quoted from Reuters, Friday (3/4/2026).

Not only George, but Hegseth is also said to have dismissed several other high-ranking officials, including General David Hodne and Major General William Green.

As a temporary replacement, the position of Army Chief of Staff will be filled by General Christopher LaNeve.

There are no indications of open conflict between Hegseth and George prior to this dismissal. However, Hegseth is known for his aggressive approach to restructuring the Pentagon, including controversial policies that involved Kid Rock and are linked to support for Donald Trump.

George himself is an experienced officer who has served in Iraq and Afghanistan. He is also known to be close to former Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin and Army Secretary Dan Driscoll.

George’s dismissal extends the list of upheavals at the Pentagon in recent times, following previous changes in several strategic positions, including the previous Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Air Force General C.Q. Brown, as well as the head of Navy operations and the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Air Force.
