US Fighter Jet Makes Emergency Landing in UAE After Iran Strikes
A United States (US) fighter jet reportedly made an emergency landing in the Emirates after broadcasting the international emergency code 7700. According to flight tracking reports, the aircraft landed at Al Dhafra Air Base after allegedly taking part in strike operations in southern Iran.
Squawk code 7700 is an internationally recognised transponder signal used to declare an in-flight emergency. It provides an instant alert to air traffic controllers that the aircraft requires priority handling due to a critical situation.
Circulating reports suggest the fighter jet may have been struck by return fire from the Iranian side whilst carrying out an air strike. The incident occurred amid rising military escalation between Washington and Tehran in the Gulf region.
On Thursday (17 July) local time, American fighter jets were reported to have launched a series of air strikes on a number of sites in Iran. Targets included Bandar Abbas International Airport, Iranshahr Airport and various other pieces of civilian infrastructure.
Iranian state television confirmed that areas of Bandar Abbas were hit by American projectiles. Beyond military targets, reports from Middle Eastern social media indicated that US strikes also targeted bridges, highways and other public infrastructure.
US Central Command (Centcom) confirmed that Thursday’s strikes marked the sixth consecutive night of its military campaign against Iran. “US forces have begun a new wave of strikes against Iran for the sixth night in a row in order to degrade Iran’s military capabilities,” the official Centcom statement read.
President Donald Trump continued to step up pressure on Iran to comply with the terms set out in a memorandum of understanding and to promptly reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic route for global oil trade.
Meanwhile, US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Thursday (17 July) that it had completed its latest wave of offensive operations against Iran.
Tensions between the US and Iran escalated following the sixth night of strikes. Iran retaliated against US bases in the Gulf, whilst American strikes battered vital Iranian infrastructure.
Satellite imagery from Sentinel-2 revealed damage to Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant complex following the US strikes. Iranian authorities said the reactor remained safe and operating normally.
The conflict between the US and Iran flared once more. Tehran attacked a US base in Jordan, whilst CENTCOM pounded military targets in the Strait of Hormuz and on Qeshm Island.
US citizen Dena Karari was released by Iran after being detained since December 2024. The release took place amid military tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
