As modern warfare evolves, the nature of battlefield sacrifices has changed significantly. In the conflict with Iran that began in late February, the proportion of US female soldiers wounded or killed in action has reached its highest level compared to previous wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Pentagon data reveals a stark statistical shift. During the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, women accounted for around 2% of total combat casualties, but in the current Iran conflict, they make up 12% of the wounded (47 out of 405) and 23% of the dead (3 out of 13).
Among those killed was Technical Sergeant Ashley Pruitt, 34. She died in March following an in-air collision between two KC-135 refuelling tankers over Iraq. The tragedy occurred in the early days of the conflict when military air traffic in the Middle East was at its busiest.
Known as a skilled boom operator, a critical role responsible for connecting fuel lines to fighter jets mid-air, Pruitt was described by her husband Greg as ‘passionate about the responsibility and dynamics of being part of the crew’. She leaves behind two children, Emilia, 3, and Oliver, 12.
Master Sergeant Nicole Amor, 39, was also among the casualties. She died on 1 March alongside five other soldiers when Iranian drones struck their base in Kuwait. As an Army logistics officer, Amor was responsible for the movement of supplies and equipment for her unit.
Her husband Joey remembered Nicole as a wonderful mother to Adeline, 9, and Owen, 18. Nicole often taught her daughter strength through a simple game called ‘Girl Power’ while waiting for traffic lights to change. ‘It made my daughter feel stronger and in tune with her identity,’ Joey said emotionally.
Elisa Cardnell, president of the Service Women’s Action Network, explained that the rise in female casualties was not surprising, citing two main factors. This loss occurs amid a major Pentagon review of whether all military roles should remain open to women. However, for the families left behind, like Greg Pruitt and Joey Amor, their wives’ dedication has transcended political debates.
