The US government on Monday ordered non-essential government employees to leave Saudi Arabia. The directive came following the escalation of Iran-related conflict stemming from American military strikes on Iran.

The conflict has driven oil prices above $110 per barrel and triggered selling across Asian markets.

The US Embassy in Riyadh cited heightened risks from armed conflict, terrorism, and missile and drone attacks from Yemen and Iran. This marks the first evacuation order issued by Washington in Saudi Arabia since the outbreak of hostilities.

“This precautionary measure is intended to ensure the safety of American citizens and diplomatic staff amid ongoing security developments,” the US State Department said.

On Sunday, Saudi Arabia reported two dead and 12 injured when a projectile struck the Al Khobar province.

The Israeli military said on Monday that it has launched a new wave of attacks targeting critical infrastructure in central Iran.

Israeli authorities previously struck Iranian oil facilities on Sunday, triggering fires and sending thick smoke over Teheran and the nearby city of Karaj.

The strikes appeared to be the first military operation targeting the country’s energy infrastructure since the outbreak of hostilities.

According to CNBC International, the oil market reacted sharply. Crude oil prices surged above $110 per barrel on Monday morning after several Middle Eastern energy producers announced plans to cut production.
