US envoy: UN secretary-general selection will determine the organisation’s future
Washington (ANTARA) – The election of a new United Nations secretary-general will determine whether the organisation can work effectively, US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz said on Friday (16 October).
“I believe the choice of leader we make will determine whether this institution continues to lose relevance or … is able to reform and return to its fundamental purpose: preventing war and preserving peace,” Waltz said at the Meridian Summit.
The United States plans to close some headquarters offices and initiatives it considers “overlapping”, and to focus on matters aligned with its priorities, he added.
The second and final term of current UN Secretary-General António Guterres ends on 31 December.
