US Envoy Steve Witkoff Heads to Switzerland to Revive US-Iran Dialogue

US special envoy Steve Witkoff has reportedly departed for Switzerland to push forward the diplomatic track between the United States and Iran, following the postponement of previously scheduled negotiations. Multiple US media reports on Friday (19/6) local time indicated Witkoff was en route to the Alpine nation as both countries seek to reconvene technical discussions after an initial agreement was reached. News site Axios, citing an unnamed US official, stated Witkoff was travelling to Switzerland, whilst CNN reported the move was intended to return the follow-up negotiation process between the US and Iran to its original course. Alongside Witkoff, another envoy of President Donald Trump, Jared Kushner, is also expected to participate in the discussions in Switzerland. CNN reported Kushner is scheduled to attend the meeting, while Axios stated he was already on site. It remains unclear whether Witkoff will hold direct talks with Iranian officials during his stay in Switzerland. Previously, US Vice President JD Vance was slated to lead Washington’s delegation to Switzerland, but the White House announced on Thursday evening local time that the visit had been postponed. The negotiations, originally planned for this week, were intended to follow up on the initial agreement between the US and Iran and to open a path towards a more permanent resolution of outstanding issues in the bilateral relationship. No new schedule for the continuation of the US-Iran talks has yet been announced.
