Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The rupiah exchange rate opened stronger against the US dollar heading into the weekend, buoyed by a weakening greenback in global markets.

On Friday (12/6/2026), the Garuda currency began trading in positive territory, sharply appreciating 0.42% to the level of Rp17,900/US.ThisreboundoccurredaftertherupiahhadslumpedatthepreviouscloseonThursday(11/6/2026), weakening0.14.

Meanwhile, the US dollar index (DXY), which measures the greenback’s strength against six major world currencies, was observed to have weakened slightly by 0.03% to 99.827 as of 09:00 WIB. This decline extended the correction from the previous trading session, when the DXY closed down 0.09%.

The weakening of the US dollar in global markets has once again drawn the attention of market participants. The greenback’s correction indicates pressure on dollar-denominated assets, thereby opening room for appreciation of other countries’ currencies, including the rupiah.

The dollar weakened sharply against several major currencies after US President Donald Trump cancelled plans for a new military strike on Iran at the last minute. Trump stated that negotiations with Tehran are beginning to point towards the possibility of reaching an agreement.

Generally, the US dollar tends to strengthen when geopolitical uncertainty rises, as investors seek safe-haven assets, including US government bonds. Conversely, the dollar typically weakens when hopes for peace increase and capital flows back into riskier assets.

Trump said negotiations with Tehran have progressed to the highest levels of Iran’s leadership. He also mentioned that the agreement has received approval from a broad coalition of regional powers.

Meanwhile, Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency reported that Tehran is likely to approve the deal, although it has yet to provide an official response.
