Attacks on peacekeeping forces violate international law.

The United States is reportedly beginning to deploy forces with ground operation capabilities to the Middle East region amid rising conflict with Iran. This move signals a significant escalation, although no official announcement regarding a ground invasion has been made.

At least 2,500 marines and sailors aboard the USS Tripoli have reportedly arrived in the area. They are carrying combat equipment, air support, and rapid reaction units designed for expeditionary operations, including amphibious landings and rapid combat missions.

Military reinforcement also comes from elements of the 82nd Airborne Division, an elite unit known for its rapid mobilisation capabilities to conflict zones. This unit is typically used to seize strategic points, respond to crises, and support the initial phases of combat operations.

The presence of US forces with ground combat capabilities in an area plagued by active conflict demonstrates Washington’s readiness to address various possibilities on the ground.

Nevertheless, the deployed strength is not prepared for large-scale occupation. The focus is more on operational flexibility, ranging from limited strikes, securing infrastructure, evacuating civilians, to reinforcing frontline military positions.

The Marine expeditionary unit carried by the USS Tripoli allows the US to expand military options beyond air and sea strikes. Meanwhile, airborne troops provide rapid response capabilities, including establishing a military presence in disputed areas in a short time.

The combination of these two forces opens the possibility of transitioning from long-range strikes to direct ground operations if the situation develops. However, the troop deployment does not yet mean that a ground war has begun. Nonetheless, that option is being prepared.

On the other hand, Iran has responded with strong rhetoric. Iran’s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, warned of the country’s readiness to confront such a possibility.

“Our forces are waiting for the arrival of American troops on the ground to burn them and punish their regional allies forever,” he stated.

That statement reflects the high risks if the conflict expands to ground operations. Unlike air or sea strikes, direct involvement on the ground would place military personnel at greater risk and open the potential for prolonged escalation in the region.

This step is taken alongside US efforts in conducting a joint campaign with Israel against Iran.

The Catholic Archbishop for US military services stated that it is morally acceptable to disobey orders if troops believe the orders conflict with their conscience.

US President Donald Trump emphasised that he will not send ground troops to Ukraine but leaves open the possibility of providing air support.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Iran’s demand for America to recognise Iran’s sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz in ongoing negotiations is unacceptable.

An important committee in Iran’s parliament has approved a plan to impose toll tariffs on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. This is according to local media reports on Tuesday (31/3).

Perhaps Trump is seeking a way to end the war without being branded as miscalculating and losing the war?

Spanish government officials have rejected a US request to use its airspace for flights related to the war involving Iran.

The US military is preparing scenarios for ground operations in Iran that could last for several weeks. However, it is still awaiting a decision from US President Donald Trump.
