US Court Rejects Trump Administration Lawsuit Against Los Angeles

Los Angeles (ANTARA) - A federal court in California has dismissed a lawsuit by the administration of US President Donald Trump against Los Angeles concerning regulations that limit the city’s cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

Los Angeles City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto said on Monday that the city had “secured a legal victory” after US District Judge Fernando Olguin rejected the government’s argument that the “Sanctuary City Ordinance” was unconstitutional.

The ruling “reinforces the well-established principle that local governments have the authority to decide how they use their personnel and resources,” Soto said in a statement.

The ordinance, formally known as the “Prohibition on Use of City Resources for Federal Immigration Enforcement,” prohibits the use of city resources, property, and personnel, including the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), to cooperate with immigration authorities or share data relating to a person’s immigration status.

The policy is intended to encourage victims and witnesses of crime to feel safe to report and seek help from the police regardless of their immigration status, Soto said. “This policy does not prevent or impede lawful federal immigration enforcement operations.”

The lawsuit was filed in June 2025 after the government deployed troops to quell protests in Los Angeles opposing deportation operations. The suit accused Los Angeles of violating federal law by enacting policies that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
