Hamilton, Canada (ANTARA) — Joseph Kent, Director of the US National Counterterrorism Centre, resigned on Tuesday, stating his opposition to ongoing American military operations in Iran.

“I cannot, with a clear conscience, support the war currently being waged in Iran,” Kent wrote in a letter shared on the social media platform X.

He argued that Iran does not pose a direct threat to the United States and claimed that the conflict has been triggered by external pressure.

Kent, a veteran who stated he has been assigned to combat operations eleven times, also alluded to personal loss, describing himself as a “Gold Star husband” following the death of his wife, also a soldier, in a previous war.

He also criticised Israeli officials and several American media figures, accusing them of misleading the government and drawing parallels with the Iraq War.

“The same tactics that Israel used to drag us into the disastrous Iraq War, which cost the lives of thousands of our nation’s finest sons and daughters. We must not repeat this mistake.”

In his message to US President Donald Trump, Kent urged him to change policy direction.
