WASHINGTON — The United States military has launched a new attack on Iran, targeting a military site in Bandar Abbas, a strategic port city.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed its forces shot down four Iranian suicide drones “posing a threat around the Strait of Hormuz”. CENTCOM added it also targeted an Iranian ground control station in Bandar Abbas that was preparing to launch a fifth drone. Meanwhile, Iranian local media reported explosions heard east of the city.

The attack comes amid a fragile ceasefire between the US and Iran and protracted negotiations to end a three-month conflict that has crippled shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz and spiked global energy prices.

CENTCOM described its military action as “measured, purely defensive, and intended to preserve the ceasefire”, according to CNN.

During a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, US President Donald Trump claimed Iran is currently “negotiating while gasping for breath (under pressure)”. He stated his war strategy would not be affected by the upcoming US midterm elections in November.

“Perhaps we should go back there and finish it, perhaps not,” Trump said.
