US Closes Embassy in Bahrain Following Iranian Attack on Military Base
The United States has closed its embassy building in Bahrain. This decision follows Iranian attacks on US military bases located in Bahrain.
“Given the ongoing missile attacks against Bahrain on 28 February, the US Embassy in Bahrain will be closed on Sunday, 1 March 2026,” the embassy stated in a statement, according to AFP, Saturday (28/2/2026).
The US Embassy in Bahrain has cancelled all scheduled activities on 1 March. The US has not yet explained when the embassy in Bahrain will resume normal operations.
“We have cancelled all regular and emergency consular appointments for Sunday, 1 March 2026. We will inform you when the embassy resumes normal operations,” the US Embassy statement added.
The US and Israel are known to have attacked Iranian territory this morning. Iran subsequently launched retaliatory strikes targeting several US military bases in the Middle East region.
A series of explosions rocked several Arab Gulf nations hosting US military bases on Saturday (28/2) local time. From Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, to Kuwait, all reported a series of explosions after the US and Israel attacked Iran.
Bahrain News Agency, as reported by CNN and The Guardian, reported that the headquarters of the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet service centre in Bahrain had “become a target of missile attacks”.
Iran’s news agency, Fars, separately stated that missile strikes had been launched against US bases in Bahrain.
Bahrain is known to be one of the US’s important allies in the Persian Gulf region and is the permanent host of the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet headquarters in the capital, Manama.
Several circulating videos show plumes of smoke rising from the direction of the US Naval base in Bahrain. According to a US official, quoted by CNN, the base was attacked by Iranian missiles.
