US Claims Peace Agreement is Nearing, Awaits Iran's Response within 48 Hours
According to AFP on Wednesday (6/5/2026), US media outlet Axios reported today local time that the two countries have entered the final stage of an agreement on a one-page memorandum of understanding to end the war. The memorandum also includes a framework for more detailed nuclear negotiations.
Axios’s report, citing sources from two US officials, stated that the agreement would involve Iran’s commitment to a moratorium on nuclear enrichment and the United States’ agreement to release billions of dollars in frozen Iranian funds.
Washington is reportedly awaiting a response from Tehran on several key points within the next 48 hours.
“Nothing has been agreed upon yet, but sources say this is the closest agreement the two sides have ever reached since the war began,” Axios stated.
The report also mentioned that the agreement would announce the end of the US-Iran war and the start of a 30-day negotiation period. Axios sources indicated that the negotiations could take place in Islamabad or Geneva.
Separately, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said today that the US proposal to end the war is still “under review” by Tehran.
“The US plan and proposal are still under review by Iran,” Baqaei told the ISNA news agency.
He stated that Tehran would convey its views to the main mediator, Pakistan, after “finalising its views”.
US President Donald Trump previously stated that he wants the war to end. Trump also issued an ultimatum to carry out more intensive attacks against Iran if no agreement is reached.
