US chooses to 'strangle' Iran economically after halting negotiations

The United States government has informed its political allies that it is changing its strategy to an effort to gradually “strangle” Iran economically, rather than continuing its previous approach of military action, CNN reported citing US officials on Tuesday.

On the same day, US President Donald Trump said that Washington is not engaged in talks with Tehran and has no plans to hold negotiations.

White House officials recently told political allies that the US government is changing its strategy, from launching strikes against Iran as quickly as possible to an effort to gradually “strangle” the country, CNN reported.

US officials said a new sanctions package against Iran is expected to be imposed this week, while a blockade of Iranian ports will be maintained.

The White House is also reportedly concerned that a potential deal between Iran and Oman regarding shipping arrangements through the Strait of Hormuz could strengthen Tehran’s control over the strategic waterway.

A number of US officials also believe that Oman has taken a more pro-Iran position in the negotiations, rather than acting as a neutral mediator.

Trump previously said that the United States does not intend to extend the memorandum of understanding with Iran, which expired on Monday.
