U.S. charged with leaving toxic waste
MANILA (AFP): About 40 activists staged a protest in front of the U.S. embassy yesterday to demand that the United States clean up toxic waste allegedly left at former U.S. bases in the Philippines.
The left-wing protesters gave a statement to the embassy, saying the United States should close all its military bases overseas and that it should pay for cleaning up all contamination left behind.
A group of policemen arrived at the scene and pushed them away, saying they had no permit to stage a rally, witnesses said. After failing to negotiate to be allowed to stay, the activists dispersed peacefully.
