US Boosts Intelligence Assets in Cuba, Signalling Pressure on Regime

The United States has reportedly increased its intelligence assets in Cuba in recent months. The move is part of the Trump administration’s efforts to push the communist regime on the island nation to either implement reforms or relinquish power. According to two sources familiar with the plan, the heightened intelligence activity could be a harbinger of various future actions, ranging from US military operations to intensive efforts to influence Cuban officials or civilians to turn against the regime. One source mentioned that the US recently dispatched spies and assets to Cuba. However, details regarding the scope of the intelligence gathering or the specific agencies involved were not disclosed to maintain operational security. The US intelligence community comprises 18 offices and agencies. A second source described the move as an increase in the CIA’s presence in Cuba. US intelligence activity on the island has actually been ongoing for decades but was hampered in recent years due to personnel reductions triggered by the Havana Syndrome incidents. The increased intelligence presence is described as a key tactical step that could pave the way for a possible US military inquisition, although the outline of such an operation remains unclear. Cuba is located just 90 miles from the US coast. The Trump administration is currently facing a six-month conflict with Iran. However, internal sources assert that the Iran issue does not need to be resolved before the US takes action in Cuba. The Cuba issue is reportedly a top priority for Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is of Cuban descent. Beyond intelligence, the US is increasing economic pressure through an energy blockade that has caused widespread power outages across much of Cuba. On the legal front, the Department of Justice has filed charges against former Cuban President Raul Castro in connection with an incident that resulted in four deaths in 1996. The State Department recently released a document titled ‘Cuba: The Capital of 21st Century Communism’, accusing the Cuban regime of decades of malpractice. This is part of the Trump administration’s broader push against communist and socialist ideologies. Although President Trump is said to still prefer diplomacy to achieve reform goals, a deadlock in economic negotiations is making the option of military action increasingly considered. Marco Rubio is reportedly losing patience with the Cuban regime, which remains resistant to Washington’s demands for major change. The CIA declined to comment on the report. A White House spokesperson, the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) have also not provided an official response.
