British police have released five men on bail following their arrest on suspicion of terrorism and explosives offences near a military airbase in western England. This release comes amidst escalating diplomatic tensions, as Iran has vehemently denied any involvement in the alleged terrorist cell.

According to Al Jazeera on Tuesday (29/09/2026), the five suspects, British nationals in their early 20s from London, were released on Monday. They had been detained for over a day after three suspicious vans were spotted in the countryside near RAF Fairford, a British base used by the United States in its conflict with Iran, which frequently serves as a focal point for anti-war protests.

UK Counter-Terrorism Chief Laurence Taylor emphasised that the suspects will be subject to very strict bail conditions. They are currently under intensive investigation under the Explosives Act and on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts.

While the police have not openly linked Iran to the arrests, investigators are examining potential involvement by foreign governments, such as Iran and Russia, or non-state armed groups.
