US Backs Strengthened Investment, Technology Cooperation with Indonesia
The United States will continue to strengthen cooperation with Indonesia in the fields of technology, critical minerals, investment, and security, according to US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Peter Haymond. “We will continue to work together in new technologies, critical minerals, developing a business environment that can encourage foreign investment into Indonesia, and the security sector,” Haymond said during the ‘Independence Day 2026: 250 Years of American Independence’ press conference in Jakarta on Thursday evening. He stated that the US will keep supporting Indonesia’s efforts to create a conducive business climate to expand trade and investment. Haymond noted that security cooperation not only covers traditional issues like border protection and maritime law enforcement but also new challenges emerging alongside technological advancement. He assessed that artificial intelligence offers significant benefits but can also be misused for criminal acts such as fraud and online gambling. “So, we need to work with Indonesia and other partners to fight these new security challenges, such as online gambling and online fraud,” he said. Furthermore, Haymond said the US wants to strengthen its educational partnership with Indonesia so that more Indonesian students can pursue education in the United States. He noted that such cooperation could be expanded through scholarship programmes, educational exchanges, and the use of digital technology and online learning. “We can also share teaching materials because both our countries care about the younger generation as the future of our nations,” he said. On the same occasion, Haymond remarked that his travels to various regions of Indonesia over the past year have reinforced his belief that the Indonesia-US relationship is one of the most important partnerships in the Asia-Pacific. “I am confident the US-Indonesia partnership will continue to grow stronger and reach new heights in the years to come,” he said at the event, which was also attended by several Indonesian government officials, diplomats, and representatives of friendly nations.
