US Attacks Qeshm, Iran Launches Missiles at Bahrain and Kuwait, One Dead
The escalation of conflict between the United States and Iran has reached a new boiling point after both parties engaged in intense mutual attacks throughout the night. This incident marks one of the most severe clashes since the fragile ceasefire began last April.
US forces launched strikes on Qeslag Island in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran retaliated by firing missiles and drones towards Bahrain and Kuwait. The attack in Kuwait caused one death at Kuwait International Airport, forcing local authorities to suspend all flight operations.
US Central Command (Centcom) stated on Tuesday (2/6) that they conducted self-defence strikes against Iranian military ground control stations on Qeshm Island. This move was claimed as a response to the launch of Iranian ballistic missiles targeting Kuwaiti and Bahraini territories.
These tensions occur amidst a deadlock in peace negotiations intended to end the war between the two nations. Aggressive military actions in Lebanon and ongoing retaliatory strikes now threaten the sustainability of the diplomatic process.
US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, reaffirmed the Trump administration’s demands in peace talks. Rubio stated that Tehran must meet two primary conditions before Washington eases financial sanctions or ends the blockade of Iranian ports.
The Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Iranian drone attacks hit Kuwait International Airport on Wednesday (2/6) morning, resulting in one fatality and several injuries. Kuwait Civil Aviation authorities immediately diverted flights from Terminal 1, which had only resumed operations two days prior following repairs from previous damage in February.
Meanwhile, the Bahrain Defence Force reported that their air defence systems successfully intercepted three missiles and several drones targeting civilian infrastructure. No casualties were reported in the Bahrain incident.
Prior to the aerial escalation, Centcom reported firing Hellfire missiles at the engine room of the Botswana-flagged tanker Lexie. The vessel was intercepted while heading towards Kharg Island, as it was deemed to have ignored US blockade warnings. The action disabled the ship to prevent supplies from reaching Iranian ports.
Tehran, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, strongly condemned the US attacks and stated that Kuwait and Bahrain bear responsibility for allowing their territories to be used by the US military. Iran asserted it would use all available capacity to defend its territorial sovereignty, including directly targeting the sources of aggression.
With peace talks suspended by Tehran since last Monday, the Middle East region now faces high uncertainty as the intensity of attacks increases across various fronts, including the involvement of the conflict in Lebanon.
