US Attacks, Iran Says Don't Regret It
A senior Iranian parliamentarian has warned the United States that the latest attacks on Tehran, amid ongoing negotiations to end the conflict, will result in ‘setbacks’ and ‘regret’. Washington has been accused of violating the principles of negotiation by striking Iran.
Ibrahim Azizi, who chairs the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission in the Iranian parliament, said the recent US attacks on Iran had exposed Washington’s lack of commitment to diplomacy and the ceasefire agreement.
Azizi’s warning came after Iran and the US exchanged fire over the weekend, with Washington accusing Tehran of violating the truce by attacking a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran did not explicitly deny or confirm involvement in the attack. However, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had previously warned that vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz without Tehran’s permission ‘will be dealt with’.
In his statement on Saturday, Azizi said the US had ‘once again attacked Iran in the midst of negotiations’. He went on to call US President Donald Trump a ‘failed’ president.
‘That failed US president has shown that he has no commitment to the principles of negotiation or the ceasefire,’ Azizi said.
‘This reckless violation of the ceasefire, as usual, will lead to setbacks and regret for their side,’ he stressed.
‘Blame-shifting tactics no longer work,’ Azizi added.
Azizi’s statement came hours after the IRGC announced its naval forces had targeted US military positions in various areas of the Gulf, in retaliation for the latest American strikes on southern Iran.
Earlier, US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced late on Friday night that US forces had targeted Iranian missile and drone storage sites, as well as coastal radar positions.
CENTCOM stressed that the US strikes were a response to ‘unprovoked aggression by Iranian forces against commercial shipping’ that ‘clearly violated the ceasefire’.
‘A decisive response to yesterday’s attack on a commercial vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz,’ CENTCOM stated.
Trump, in a statement via Truth Social, condemned the Iranian drone attack on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz. ‘Clearly, this is a foolish violation of our ceasefire agreement,’ he said.
