US Army General and Attorney General Sacked as Trump Cleans House
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reportedly dismissed the US Army Chief of Staff Randy George on Thursday (2/4/2026) amid rising military tensions in the Middle East region.
The Pentagon confirmed that George, who still had more than a year left in his term, “will retire from his position as the 41st Army Chief of Staff effective immediately,” the statement said, quoted from CNBC International on Friday (3/4/2026).
The Pentagon stated in a release that they thanked George for his decades of service. “We wish him the best in his retirement,” it said.
Two officials speaking anonymously said Hegseth also dismissed General David Hodne, who leads the Army’s Training and Doctrine Command, and Major General William Green, head of the Army Chaplain Corps.
Hegseth had previously dismissed a series of US military leaders such as General C.Q. Brown from the Joint Chiefs of Staff position, Admiral Lisa Franchetti from the Chief of Naval Operations position, and General James Slife from the Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force position.
On the same day, US Attorney General Pam Bondi was sacked by US President Donald Trump.
Reports indicate Trump was disappointed with Bondi for failing to quell the Jeffrey Epstein case and drag Trump’s political enemies to court.
Deputy Attorney General, former Trump lawyer Todd Blanche, will fill the acting Attorney General position. In a social media post, Trump described Blanche as a “highly talented and respected lawyer.”
Trump is reportedly keen to appoint Lee Zeldin, currently serving as head of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as Bondi’s replacement.
As head of the EPA, Zeldin, among other things, successfully shifted the US government’s position on climate change.
