US and Western Nations Absent from Khamenei's Funeral
Representatives from 100 countries are expected to attend the funeral ceremony of the former Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei. However, the United States and several Western nations will not be present at the event.
As previously reported, Khamenei passed away at the age of 86 following a US-Israel airstrike on his residential complex on 28 February. The funeral procession has just commenced and is scheduled to last for six days.
According to Al-Jazeera and Xinhua on Sunday (5/7/2026), the spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esmaeil Baghaei, stated that delegations from 110 countries are set to attend the funeral. This was announced during an interview with the state broadcaster, IRIB TV.
Despite the large number of attendees, the US and several Western nations are absent from the funeral procession. The following nations have confirmed the attendance of heads of state or official delegations:
Pakistan: The Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Thursday that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will attend the state funeral. Pakistan has played a central role in mediating between the US and Iran. Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, have landed in Tehran to attend the ceremony.
Tajikistan: President Emomali Rahmon will also attend the funeral.
Armenia: Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan will represent his country at the commemoration.
Georgia: The Georgian government has confirmed that President Mikheil Kavelashvili will attend.
Turkey: Ankara has confirmed that Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz will attend the funeral.
India: India stated on Thursday that a Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and a state governor will represent the country at the state funeral.
China: Senior Chinese politician He Wei, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, will attend the funeral in Tehran, as announced by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Russia: The Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, attended the ceremony on Friday. Medvedev is a former President and Prime Minister of Russia.
Afghanistan: The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the Taliban government’s Foreign Minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, travelled to Tehran on Thursday to attend the state funeral.
Bangladesh: The Speaker of the Bangladesh Parliament, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, is scheduled to attend the state funeral in Tehran.
Qatar and Saudi Arabia: Both Qatar and Saudi Arabia are sending delegations to attend the funeral. The Saudi Arabian delegation is led by Deputy Foreign Minister Walid Al-Khuraiji.
Indonesia: Indonesia is also sending a delegation, represented by the Indonesian Ambassador to Tehran, Rolliansyah Soemirat.
