US and South Korea Strengthen Cooperation to Address North Korean Nuclear Threat
The United States and South Korea have agreed to maintain close communication and cooperation to address North Korea’s nuclear issue. The move is intended to promote sustainable peace on the Korean Peninsula.
The agreement was reached during a telephone conversation between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun on Monday (24/8). According to a report by Yonhap News Agency citing South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, both sides stressed the importance of strategic coordination regarding Pyongyang’s nuclear programme.
“The minister and secretary agreed to continue close communication and cooperation between South Korea and the US for peace on the Korean Peninsula and the resolution of the North Korean nuclear issue while maintaining a solid combined defence posture,” the official statement said, as reported by Anadolu on Tuesday (25/8).
US State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said in a separate statement that Rubio stressed the need for both countries to continue coordinating on various issues crucial to the Washington-Seoul alliance. However, neither Seoul nor Washington specifically mentioned the term denuclearisation in their official statements this time.
During the discussion, Foreign Minister Cho Hyun expressed the South Korean government’s readiness to help ensure that US President Donald Trump’s message to North Korea could pave the way for the resumption of diplomatic dialogue. The move is expected to be a turning point for regional stability.
Cho’s statement referred to Trump’s comments last week expressing hope to meet again with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un by the end of this year. A Wall Street Journal report said Trump is seeking to arrange the meeting, which may take place on the sidelines of an official trip to Asia, including during the APEC Summit in Shenzhen, China, in November.
The meeting is considered potentially a significant development after relations between the two countries were marked by high tension due to North Korea’s missile tests and nuclear programme in recent years.
In addition to focusing on the Korean Peninsula issue, Rubio and Cho also discussed strengthening bilateral relations in the economic and security sectors. Both agreed to enhance cooperation to reach mutually beneficial agreements on a number of sensitive issues.
This discussion confirms that the US-South Korea alliance now focuses not only on North Korea’s military threat but also encompasses the global geopolitical agenda and economic stability in the East Asia region.
