US and Saudi Arabia Formally Agree on Multi-Billion Dollar Civil Nuclear Cooperation

The United States government has announced a civil nuclear cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman formally signed the peaceful nuclear cooperation agreement along with a bilateral safeguards agreement.

The US Department of Energy stated that these two agreements establish the legal foundation for a multi-billion dollar partnership projected to last for decades to come. This cooperation aims to advance a number of economic and strategic targets, including strengthening global nuclear non-proliferation standards.

Through this peaceful nuclear cooperation agreement, American companies will gain broad access to participate in Saudi Arabia’s nuclear energy programme.

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright affirmed that the deal is designed with the highest safety standards and relies on the best technology from the United States.

‘Rest assured, this agreement upholds the highest standards of nuclear safety and non-proliferation, and relies on the world’s best nuclear technology and scientists, designed right here in the United States. Thanks to President Trump, America’s nuclear renaissance is underway,’ he said.

Wright added that the two agreements signed with Saudi Arabia reflect a shared commitment by both nations to strengthen commercial ties. This step is expected to bolster the domestic economy whilst maintaining the security of allies abroad.

Following the signing process, the agreement documents will next be submitted to the US Congress for further review.
