US and Iran Poised for Peace, Trump to Sign Draft Agreement Today
The United States (US) and Iran are poised to make peace in the near future. President Donald Trump has confirmed that a draft agreement between the two nations is set to be signed today, Sunday (14/6/2026).
The Strait of Hormuz, which was closed following the conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran, will be reopened to all parties once the deal is signed.
“The deal is scheduled to be signed tomorrow (Sunday), and immediately upon signing, the Strait of Hormuz will be OPEN TO ALL,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account, as quoted by Al Jazeera on Sunday (14/6/2026).
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also stated that the agreement is likely to be concluded within the next 24 hours. His country played a central role in the negotiations between the US and Iran.
“We are closer to a peace deal than ever before,” he said in a post on X on Saturday (13/6/2026).
However, this announcement contradicts an earlier statement from Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmael Baghaei. He explained that a memorandum of understanding would not be signed on Sunday. Negotiators, he added, have no immediate plans to travel to Geneva, Switzerland, for preparations. The signing is likely to take place in the coming days, he said.
Al Jazeera reports that Iran and the US are at odds over the details of the agreement. Nevertheless, both feuding parties have confirmed that a deal is closer than ever. No information regarding the contents of the agreement has been released so far. On Friday (12/6/2026), officials from both countries also confirmed that the agreement was not yet in its finalisation stage.
Despite the progress in US-Iran diplomacy, Israel is reported to be continuing its attacks in southern Lebanon. At least five people were killed in the airstrikes. One of the victims was the mayor of Ar-rihan, Ali Badie, who died in an attack in the Jezzine district. Three others were reported killed in the towns of Deir al-Zahrani and Kafr Reman in the Nabatieh district.
