US Air Strikes on Iran's Qeshm Island Kill Husband, Wife, and Two Toddlers
US airstrikes conducted during the night have struck Iranian territory, killing a married couple and their two-year-old child. The victims died inside their home in Chah Tangu Village, located on Qeshm Island in southern Iran, according to Iranian state media. Two other children, aged 11 and 7, were successfully rescued from the rubble and are currently receiving medical treatment.
Chah Tangu is primarily inhabited by street sweepers and labourers. Qeshm Island is the largest island in the Persian Gulf and is situated near the vital shipping lane of the Strait of Hormuz. Footage released by Iranian media shows a wall clock inside the victims’ home stopped at 03:36 local time at the moment of the impact.
Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Esmaeil Baqaei, confirmed the identities of the deceased as Qaisar and Zahra Jafari, along with their innocent son, Sina, aged two. He added that several other residential houses were also destroyed. In a statement on the X platform, Baqayer asserted that these military actions only serve to strengthen Iranian national solidarity, stating that every crime and threat makes the Iranian people more united in defending their homeland.
The United States is reported to have launched renewed strikes targeting various locations across southern and coastal Iran following a brief lull in fighting. US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that its forces conducted a “heavy wave of strikes” against Iran, describing the actions as retaliation for alleged attempted missile attacks targeting US forces in the Middle East.
In addition to the residential areas in Chah Tangu, a sports centre in the city of Farashband was also reported to have sustained damage, though no casualties were reported there. Qeshm Island has been a frequent target throughout the ongoing conflict; notably, in March, Iranian state media accused the US of attacking a water desalination facility on the island.
The escalating conflict has caused profound anxiety among local residents. One 50-year-old resident of Qeshm Island described the difficulty of maintaining a normal life under the constant threat of attack, noting the fear of whether one will survive the night or if family members will remain safe.
Diplomatic efforts appear to be on the brink of collapse as tensions rise following strikes involving Bahrain and Kuwait. While the US has threatened severe retaliation following ballistic missile attacks on US assets, Iran maintains that there is no ceasefire agreement in place and continues to prioritise recognition of its control over the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, mediation efforts by Qatar and Pakistan to revive interim agreements continue amidst the ongoing instability.
