Tensions between the United States (US) and Iran have risen again after Iranian state media reported an airstrike near the city of Piranshahr in western Iran, close to the Iraqi border. The incident occurred amidst a fragile security situation following a de-escalation of mutual attacks.

Iranian state television station IRIB reported on Wednesday (29/7) that the airstrike targeted a location in West Azerbaijan Province. According to the report, the attack was allegedly carried out by the United States.

There has been no official report yet regarding casualties or the extent of the damage caused by the strike. The incident took place while the security situation in the region remains fragile. In recent days, the intensity of clashes had decreased after the exchange of attacks between the United States and Iran subsided since Friday.

Previously, US President Donald Trump stated that a ceasefire had ended on 8 July following an attack on a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, which Washington blamed on Tehran.

During the period of escalation, the US military launched a number of strikes inside Iranian territory. According to a statement from the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), these operations targeted military infrastructure, coastal surveillance systems, missile and drone facilities, naval assets, and logistics centres.

Iran subsequently responded by launching attacks on US military facilities and equipment located in several Arab countries in the Middle East region.

This latest conflict has reignited despite Washington and Tehran having signed a memorandum of understanding in June. Both parties had called for a cessation of hostilities and the commencement of a negotiation process towards a broader agreement to end the war that erupted following Israeli and American attacks on 28 February.
