The US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that several missiles were launched a few hours ago in what it believes was an attempted surprise attack on bases in the Middle East, with the main target being a US base located in Jordan. CENTCOM confirmed that all missiles were intercepted and US forces remain on high alert.

US forces in the Gulf are currently awaiting word from President Donald Trump, who has left the Oval Office and has been briefed on the unfolding situation in the Middle East. Just days ago, Trump described talks with Iran as very friendly, but also warned he was not convinced Iran was serious about peace. He stressed the US would take very tough military action if he deemed it necessary.

This has raised concerns that Washington may respond militarily to the latest incident. Analysts suggest that while Trump frequently speaks of his desire to reach a deal, this serves as a reminder from Iran of its presence. Iran is aware that Trump has recently spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the situation, and this may be a way of sending a message that it needs to be included in any discussions.

The US currently has over 20 naval vessels stationed in the region, many involved in a blockade against Iran to prevent ships from entering or leaving, which Tehran views as an act of war. Iran has not yet claimed responsibility for the reported attack in Jordan, though it has previously targeted the al-Azraq Air Base due to the advanced command and control capabilities it provides the US Air Force.

US crude oil futures surged more than 4% to surpass $82 a barrel after the military confirmed the ballistic missile attack on US forces in the Middle East. Brent crude futures also rose, trading above $88 a barrel.
