US Accused by Iran of Violating Peace Agreement
The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on Saturday (27/6) that US attacks on its territory constitute a blatant violation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) peace agreement previously agreed upon by both nations.
“The Iranian Foreign Ministry condemns the airstrikes carried out by US terrorist military forces against several locations on the southern coast of Iran on Friday night, 26 June 2026,” the ministry said in a statement published via its official Telegram channel.
“This brutal attack targeting Iranian coast guard facilities is a serious violation of the UN Charter, as well as a blatant violation of the first paragraph of the MoU,” the statement read.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed on Friday that the attacks against Iran were in response to an alleged attack on a merchant vessel in the Strait of Hormuz the previous day. Following this, the Iranian military launched attacks against several US military facilities in the Middle East.
On 28 February, the United States and Israel launched attacks on several targets in Iran, resulting in damage and civilian casualties. Iran and the US subsequently signed an electronic MoU on 18 June to cease the military conflict.
The MoU provided a 60-day window for both nations to negotiate a final agreement regarding Iran’s nuclear programme and the lifting of US sanctions. The document also addressed the lifting of the US maritime blockade against Iran and the restoration of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
According to CENTCOM, the strike was a response to an alleged attack on a commercial vessel traversing the Strait of Hormuz the day prior.
Araghchi expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s continued support for the peace process. He warned that if the provisions are not met, it could result in the suspension of the established parallel routes.
Tehran views the attack as a “blatant violation” of the United Nations (UN) Charter and the fundamental principles of international law. Iran has announced a total closure of the Strait of Hormuz, warning that any vessel attempting to traverse this strategic waterway will be attacked.
