Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on Saturday (27/6) that the US attack on its country constitutes a flagrant violation of the peace memorandum of understanding (MoU) agreed upon by both nations. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran condemns the air strikes carried out by the terrorist US military against several locations on the southern coast of Iran on Friday evening, 26 June 2026,” the ministry said in a statement published via its official Telegram channel. “This brutal attack, which targeted Iranian coast guard facilities, is a serious violation of the UN Charter, as well as a flagrant violation of the first paragraph of the memorandum of understanding,” the statement read. US Central Command (CENTCOM) on Friday confirmed the strikes against Iran were in response to an alleged attack on a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz the previous day. Following this, the Iranian military launched attacks on several US military facilities in the Middle East. On 28 February, the United States and Israel launched strikes against a number of targets in Iran, causing damage and killing civilians. Iran and the US subsequently signed the MoU electronically on 18 June to halt the military conflict. The MoU provides a 60-day window for both countries to negotiate a final agreement regarding Iran’s nuclear programme and the lifting of US sanctions. The document also stipulates the lifting of the US maritime blockade against Iran and the restoration of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
