US Abruptly Cancels Marine Drill with South Korea, Why?

The United States government has suddenly cancelled a joint marine exercise with South Korea scheduled for next month. What is the reason?

The cancellation, as reported by Reuters on Monday (24/8/2026), was announced by the South Korean Marine Corps in a statement released on Monday (24/8) local time, after the US cited troop constraints due to the war against Iran.

The joint marine exercise was said to involve amphibious landing drills participated in by marine personnel from the two allied countries.

A spokesman for the South Korean Marine Corps said in a press statement that the US Marine Corps had officially informed them in June that troop availability would be limited for the division-level exercise, known as Ssangyong.

The two countries, the spokesman said, continue to hold close consultations on resuming the joint marine exercise.

He did not specify what steps might be taken to prevent future cancellations, or to replace the lost training opportunity.

US Forces Korea (USFK) has not yet provided an official response to the report.

The cancellation of the joint marine exercise follows a sudden order from US President Donald Trump to reduce the scale of the annual joint military drills between the two countries, which were ended early on Friday (21/8) last week.

Trump cited the high cost and Seoul’s refusal to engage in US operations against Iran as his reasons for issuing the order.

In a statement via his Truth Social account, Trump also said that the joint military exercise, named Ulchi Freedom Shield, sent “a completely inappropriate and hostile signal to a country that, during Donald J Trump’s presidency, has shown no threat and has been respectful”. Trump was referring to North Korea, which has always condemned the US-South Korea joint exercises as “preparations for invasion”.

Despite the reduced scale of the joint exercise, Pyongyang launched 10 short-range ballistic missiles last week and released a statement condemning the exercise.
